Campus Pointe Mall in Kalamazoo is making room for a new ‘flair’ bar and a Wide Side Smoke Shop
KALAMAZOO, MI – The Campus Pointe Mall near Western Michigan University will have a few new tenants by the time the winter weather starts to break.
A new restaurant/tavern – whose name has not year been decided – will use the space that has been vacated by Pop’s Italian Beef & Sausage.
Pops opened in October of 2009 and closed about a year ago.
“They have a couple of different names in mind,” Maureen Daniel, director of leasing for mall property owner Allied Capital Corp., said of the local business owners who will renovate the space. She would not name the owners.
“They have another concept in town,” Daniel said. “They are just working through their liquor license approval.”
She said they hope to have the restaurant and bar up and going in 6,360 square feet of space at 2904 Howard St. by March or April.
According to one source, the tavern portion of the business is expected to be a”flair” bar, one in which bartenders make a show of how they flip liquor bottles and bar tools to pour drinks.
A location of Wild Side Smoke Shop, a California-based tobacco and smoking accessories shop, will use about 900 square feet of space at 2909 Howard St., just north (to the right) of the new Insomnia Cookies store.
Wild Side Smoke Shop sells cigarette rolling papers, hand-blown glass tobacco accessories, lighters and hookah pipes and products. It has a growing number of locations in Michigan, including East Lansing, Ann Arbor, Mount Pleasant and other college towns.
Daniel said she expects the shop to open in 30 to 45 day. It will utilize about 997 square feet of space that is being culled from a larger space there.
Insomnia Cookies, whose Kalamazoo location was set to open Monday (Jan. 7) is utilizing about 900 square feet of adjacent space at 2905 Howard St. It is a subsidiary company of New York-based Serve U Brands. Scheduled to open at the same time, immediately south (to the left) of Insomnia is another Serve U Brands business,Sliders Burgers & Belgian Fries.
A seller of slider burgers, fries and other foods, Sliders Burgers & Belgian Fries is using most of a former Real Deal Classic Burgers & Shakes space at 2901 Howard St.
It and Insomnia Cookies are expected to be open until 3 a.m. most nights, with Insomnia Cookies specializing in delivering fresh-baked cookies. It is part of a growing business started in 2003 by a University of Pennsylvania student, almost entirely focused on college student populations.
Off Howard Street and East Michigan Avenue, and just west of Western Michigan University’s main campus, Campus Pointe Mall is the home of Video Hits Plus, The Pita Pit, Coffee Works, Mega Tanz, the Grotto at Capone’s, Marco’s Pizza, Metro PCS and other businesses.
